What is Stenciling? Find the Basics on Stencil Painting and Many Ideas For Decorating

So, what is stenciling and what exactly are stencils? If you opened this page I am going to assume that you are a real novice on the subject of stencils. I hope to give you the basics and maybe inspire you to move forward with this knowledge and embark on a great hobby. Stencils help us create art even if we do not possess the talent to freely wisp a brush through paint, slather it on a canvas and come away with a masterpiece. Stencils get our creative juices flowing and let us put a hand painted image on whatever surface we desire. If you are looking to add a personal and unique touch to your home, you're on the right path!

The definition of a stencil is a template that produces an exact image every time it is used. Think of a stencil as a series of holes cut into a sheet of resilient, waterproof material (like paper or plastic). When paint is applied through the cut out areas to the surface beneath, an image is formed. A stencil can be used to draw or paint identical shapes, letters, patterns or symbols.

Open sections of the stencil are called islands. These are the areas that allow color to be applied on the surface under the stencil. Bridges are the stencil material that separates the islands and keeps the shape of the stencil. These areas block color or paint from reaching the surface.

So, now you know about stencils. But, what is stenciling? Stenciling is the creation of an image through the application of color on a stencil and through the removed sections (islands), leaving a reproduction of the image on the underlying surface. This can also be referred to as stencil painting.

Stencils allow us to decorate with our own personal style even if we are not Leonardo da Vinci (or Picasso - if that's more your style). If you find it difficult to sit down with paints and brushes and come away with a picture you're satisfied with, then stencils are for you. They eliminate problems with proportion (a fleur de lis will always be perfectly symmetrical), or perspective (objects will be consistent in depth or dimension and show whether they are near or far) and size (a fairies arms are in direct proportion to her legs and the rest of her body).

With stencils, you decide where you want an image and you pick the colors. You choose what size you want your painted image to be. You are the designer of your project. It's just that you have a little help along the way. And don't worry - I won't tell anyone.

The number and variety of pre-cut stencil designs and craft stencils available to you is mind numbing. Whatever you can imagine painting I'm sure that some stencil designer has thought of it. You can find them at your local craft supply store or on line.

So, what can you do with stencils? Your imagination is the limit. But here are a few ideas. Of course painting stencils on the wall is the first thing to come to mind. You can paint a border of repeating roses at the ceiling or above a chair rail. Combine several different designs to create a mural. Maybe you could just paint a single image on a wall (like a playful fairy above a light switch). Instead of painting on the walls, why not paint some art prints with stencils for hanging on the wall? It's a great way to create art that is personal and will be a perfect match to the current décor. Breathe new life into an old piece of furniture. Paint one stencil on top of an old dresser or cover the whole thing with different related designs. Paint Fleur de lis on the door panels of an old armoire. Embellish T shirts or jeans or jackets. Redesign a lamp shade. Make some great throw pillow or add a special touch to curtains. The possibilities of decorating with stencils are endless.

You should know that there are different types of stencils. Here are some of the most common for you to become familiar with. They are: Pre-Cut Stencils (already cut and ready for paint, usually made of plastic), Cut and Paint Stencils (you will need to cut out the islands but usually less expensive and flexible on size because you can enlarge or reduce the size on a copy machine before you cut them out), Single Overlay Stencils (an image that is more of a silhouette and has blank spaces between the colored areas and is completed with only one stencil page), Multiple Overlay Stencils (have more than one stencil which are painted in a sequence and produce a more complete picture with no blank spaces in between colored areas), Printable Stencils (easy to print from home without having to go to your local craft supply store) and Downloadable Stencils (easy to download to your computer at home and print for use at your convenience).

The Strangest Things Left Behind in Hotel Rooms

After a holiday spent relaxing and abdicating responsibility, it's understandable that you might leave something behind in your hotel room when you check out! An item of clothing, a mobile phone, a souvenir are all understandable left items, but how about a shark or 20 thousand Euros in cash? These two rather unusual items were among the most surprising when we asked members of Great Hotels of the World for the strangest items left behind in their properties.

Following the success of last year's most unusual guest requests stories we decided to ask our hotels for yet more unusual and strange stories. And while we expected some wacky answers, nothing could have prepared us for what was divulged.

Something a little naughty...

It seems that the most commonly forgotten item has something to do with being a little naughty in the bedroom - of over 30 luxury hotels we quizzed, well over one third told us that they'd found sex toys in their rooms. Among these the strangest would have to be from the Quay Hotel in Wales, who once found 'a tribal style doll with a wooden pop-up appendage'' in one of the rooms. We leave it to you to make up your own mind as to what that could be used for...

Pieces of self...

The next most common items left behind seem to be wigs and false teeth. Not necessarily strange, though it does make you wonder how someone can forget something so crucial behind, especially if they checked in the mirror before leaving. In one case of forgotten teeth, a guest at the Eurostars Grand Marina GL in Barcelona requested the hotel send the dentures back to the UK. Knowing how reliable Royal Mail can sometimes be, we wonder if they got lost along the way...

Unidentified Left Object

Londa in Cyprus stumbled upon a proper Da Vinci Code-style riddle when they found a book with 'an odd cover' and no title in one of their rooms. Upon opening it they found it to be written in a 'strange language'. With it was a locked box which had no apparent keyhole on it. We're still trying to figure out what it all means...

Sorry but it seems you left some money behind...

Dropping some cash on the street or leaving some money behind in the hotel room can happen when on holiday, but a few grand? This is what happened at the Palazzo Magnani Feroni in Florence where a guest left 1000 Euros in their suite. Not that strange - except it was all in coins! The guest was quick enough to realise the error and asked the hotel to send the money on to them - quite a heavy parcel, by all accounts.

Over at the Capital Hotel in London a guest once left 5,000 pounds in the safe. You can only imagine the panic when they checked their wallet on their return.

Hotel Milano in Bergamo probably takes the crown for money left behind, with a couple who once forgot 20,000 Euros in cash in their dresser. The hotel contacted them at the airport as they were about to board their flight. They returned to the hotel and chose to stay an extra night, which, considering the amount of money they'd left behind, probably was small change to them...

Just don't tell the animal activists

St. Nicolas Bay in Crete once found two goldfish in a bowl of water left behind by a guest who obviously didn't want to carry them all the way home. Meanwhile, Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque in Tenerife once found a caged cockatoo in a room. The owners subsequently asked for it to be flown back to them in a private jet. Which begs the question if they cared that much for it, why forget it in the first place?

Grand Hotel Principe Piemonte near Pisa once found a dog in one of their rooms, with little additional explanation or requests to return it to their owners. Over at the Moevenpick Istanbul, some dog-loving guests left a kennel they'd brought along for the trip.

But it's the Tivoli Marina Vilamoura in the Algarve that has the strangest animal-related story. One of their guests went fishing at the hotel and came back with a shark, which he kept in the bathtub at the hotel - not realising that sharks need saltwater, not tap water. When the poor creature began to weaken, the guest apparently decided to leave it behind, giving the cleaner the fright of her life when she came in to tidy the room. The shark was promptly returned to its natural habitat, and lived what we can only hope to be a long and fulfilled life.

Have you seen my ring?

Sensimar Royal Blue Resort in Crete once found an engagement ring left behind in a room. We can only hope it was an accident, not a disastrous proposal. And in Hotel Ranga, Iceland, one married couple checked out of the room and left a wedding ring behind. It was never claimed - which maybe means the holiday didn't go as planned.

Maybe you can drive my car

Leaving car keys behind seems to be another common occurrence. But if your car cost as much as these beauties, surely you'd be a little more careful?

At the Hesperia Tower in Barcelona a guest left behind the keys to their Ferrari Testarossa. Upon finding them the staff ran to the parking lot to check if the car was still there... it wasn't. It's anyone's guess how the guest got away without his car keys. And at the Dedeman Istanbul keys for a Ferrari F430 were left behind and also never claimed. What is it about Ferrari car keys?

Advice on Getting Through the Terrible Twos

When you first become a parent life definitely changes and you might have a little anxiety and not know what you're doing, but the new baby smell instantly puts you at ease and the cuddling moments with your baby make you feel so warm and fuzzy inside, causing your anxiety to melt away. Then as your baby grows you see him smile for the first time and that lights you up inside and when he says "Mommy" you hold a celebration dinner with family and friends to show off your baby's new talent! Oh, motherhood is such a miracle! You think. Then your baby takes his first steps and you cheer him on and are so proud, until you realize that now he's free to roam wherever he wants and you have to follow him around like a shadow.

Days and nights go by as you follow your adventurous child around your home, making sure he doesn't eat the plants and doesn't drink toilet water. Being your little angel's shadow is harder than you think. Suddenly he beings to talk more and more and learns the word "No!" Now that anxiety sets in again and motherhood doesn't seem like the miracle it did when you were cuddling your warm, non-talking, non-walking little infant a few years ago.

Then toddlerhood sets in and your child has his second birthday and you tell him he can't have a 3rd piece of cake and he falls to the floor, screaming, shouting "No! No!" as all the guests stare in shock. You stand there baffled with no clue what to do, so you try reasoning, which NEVER works with a two year old, then you try bribing him with the promise of cake later, but his tears and cries just get louder...you're at your wits' end! Welcome to the Terrible Twos!

Don't fret if your toddler is already saying "No!" on a daily basis and throwing tantrums whenever he doesn't get his way. There are some simple things you can do to make the terrible twos not quite as terrible and luckily it's all about changing your behavior first and your child's behavior will change as well. Below is a list of things to expect during this challenging time in your two year olds' life and ways you can make these challenges easier.

1.Your toddler will become obsessed with the word "No!"

Combating your toddler's constant use of the "No!" word can be easier than you think. He'll enjoy using this word often because he's expressing his free will to choose and exploring his right for independence. Now you and I know that a two year old really isn't "independent", but they don't get it, so it's up to the parent to elude the youngster into thinking he's making his own choices, when we're really still in control. Here's how you do it. Give your toddler two choices at all times.

Example: If you're fixing lunch, ask your toddler if he'd like a carrot or a celery stick. If you're going out, ask your toddler if he'd like to wear his sweat shirt or his jacket. If you're lying out your child's clothes ask him if he wants to wear the red shirt or the blue one. Have him choose between a bubble bath and a shower.

The easy way for you to remember to give choices is to create a daily schedule for your toddler. At breakfast give choices between eggs or toast, at nap time ask him which teddy bear he wants to sleep with, at lunch let him pick ham or turkey in afternoon let him choose if he wants to play with a puzzle or blocks and on and on. A schedule helps you plan out the choices that you'll offer your toddler each day. This will definitely ease his use of the word "No!" by making him feel as if he's getting to choose and it will make parenting easier for you as well.

2.Your Toddler will want more freedom and independence.

This is when parents tend to start using the word "No" too often. Make life easier by setting up a safe home environment, so your toddler does feel freer to move about the house without you lurking close behind. Get safety gates to block rooms where you don't want your toddler to go. Set-up video monitors so you can watch your child at play while you tend to things in the other room. Get child size furniture so your toddler feels as if he has a space that's just for him. Get a toy box that your child is free to explore as often as he wants. Transition your toddler to a toddler bed, but make sure to baby proof his bedroom and place a safety gate across the door, so when he wakes up before you do he's not roaming the house getting into trouble. Watch your child and see what type of independence he's craving and set-up your home to match his needs.

3.Your Toddler will have mood swings and most likely throw temper tantrums!

A two year old can talk, but still doesn't have the ability to express his emotions through words, so most toddlers choose to express their emotions through tears, whining and wild tantrums now and again. Unfortunately, you really don't have any control over your child's emotions, so it's best to use preventative measures to stop your child's emotions from getting out of control and turning into an all out screaming and head banging fit on the floor.

If you notice your child is getting upset make sure to touch his shoulder or give him a hug so he knows you care. Touch is a very powerful thing and can quickly calm an upset child. Whisper how he's feeling softly in his ear..."Johnny, I know you're feeling angry cause mommy won't let you have another cookie" This way he knows you understand his anger. If he still keeps crying and making demands, walk him by hand to his room and tell him to stay there till he can calm himself down. When the tantrum is over, talk to your child about what he was feeling and explain what you were feeling as well. Tell him better ways that he can express his anger and describe how to use words instead of whines and tears to get his point across. Consider roll playing with your child and showing him better ways to express anger and sadness, using words not whines.

Just remember, the terrible twos don't last forever and if you are prepared to give your child choices, safe freedom zones, hugs and compassion then you and your child will get through those challenging times with ease, resulting in a closer and more loving relationship to last a life-time.

Also, if you see it listed as a crib by Million Dollar Baby on one site and listed as a DaVinci crib on another, that also has everything to do with how the retailer has titled the crib and has nothing to do with the company, Million Dollar Baby. So as you can see, there's absolutely no conspiracy at all. It's all just good old American Free Market Trade.
